It's a fair question. If Auto Trader puts your cars in front of active buyers, and your forecourt brings in passing trade, what's your own website actually for? Plenty of independent dealers get by without a good one — or without one at all. So let's answer it honestly: yes, you still need your own site, but only if it earns its place. A brochure site that just repeats your stock is a waste of money. A site that does the following is one of the best investments a dealer can make.
Why your own site still matters
The core reason is ownership. On a portal, you rent access to buyers and compete on price in a crowded list. Every enquiry is an introduction you pay for, and the relationship belongs to the platform. Your own website is the one place online where you own the audience, control the experience, and keep the buyer relationship. Dealers who own their audience are far less exposed to portal price rises and algorithm changes.
There's also trust. A serious buyer who finds you on a portal will very often look you up directly before making contact — checking your site, your reviews, your other stock. If what they find is dated, slow or missing, that hesitation costs you the enquiry. If it's sharp and credible, it closes the gap between interest and contact.
What a dealer website must actually do
A website earns its keep by doing specific jobs well. Here's the checklist that matters.
Work brilliantly on mobile. The majority of dealer traffic is on a phone — often over 60%. If your site is anything less than excellent on a small screen, most of your visitors are getting your worst experience. Mobile-first isn't a nice-to-have; it's where your audience is.
Show live, accurate stock. Your inventory should sync automatically from your Auto Trader feed, so it's always current. Sold cars come off, prices stay right, and you never have to touch it manually. A dealer website built this way keeps itself up to date.
Capture enquiries everywhere. Every vehicle needs a one-tap way to enquire — form, WhatsApp, finance, reservation — pre-filled with the exact car. The best-looking site in the world is worthless if a buyer can't easily raise their hand. This is the whole point of proper lead capture: turning a browser into a message you can reply to.
Load fast and be found. Speed and search visibility are linked, and both affect whether buyers ever arrive. A slow site loses buyers before it loads and ranks worse in Google for it. The technical foundations — clean structure, sensible page addresses, structured data — are what let the site show up when someone searches for the cars you sell.
Look like you. Templated sites that look like every other dealer do nothing for trust. Your site should carry your brand, so the buyer who found you on a portal recognises a real, credible business when they land.
What it should give you behind the scenes
A website isn't only the buyer-facing part. The half buyers never see is what makes it pay:
- One place for every lead, so nothing arrives in an inbox nobody checks
- Reporting you can act on — which cars drive enquiries, where buyers come from, what's converting — the sort of insight a stats and reports view gives you
- Control, so you can change and update things quickly instead of waiting on a provider
A site that only faces outward is half a tool. The dealers who get the most from theirs treat it as the front of a system that also handles their leads, stock and reporting.
When you can get away with less
To be balanced: if you're a very small operation selling a handful of cars a year to a local, word-of-mouth audience, a heavyweight site may be more than you need. But the threshold is lower than most dealers think. The moment you're relying on online demand at all — and almost every dealer now is — a site that captures and converts that demand pays for itself quickly.
The short version
You still need your own website, but not any website. It has to be mobile-first, sync live stock from your feed, capture enquiries on every car, load fast, rank, and look like your brand — and it should feed a back office that handles your leads and reporting. A site that does all that isn't a cost. It's the one online asset you actually own, and it's where portal interest turns into your customer.
